FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Kelowna, August 21, 2009
BC Interior Music Awards
Presented by Astral Media
November 6, 2009
Kelowna Community Theatre
Kelowna, B.C.

Nominations are now open for the 2009 BC Interior Music Awards.

BCIMAThe 2008 BC Interior Music Awards were developed in 2008 with a strong sense of history and legacy from the Okanagan Music Awards, with intentions to promote and celebrate music locally and a vision to develop a regional music industry. The Interior artists enjoyed an evening where industry and audience came together in a night of celebration of collective and individual achievements!  With the spirit of cooperation, the 2008 show came together quickly and was staged to a resounding success on Sept 29 2008 featuring seven of the region’s top performers and plenty of multi-media punctuating each of 24 Awards.

There has been much growth and excitement in the past year…….and we’re back, celebrating the 2009 BC Interior Music Awards with an awards show and conference on Nov 6th at the Kelowna Community Theatre.  Check www.BCIMA.org for more sights and sounds from last year’s exciting event and instructions on nominating your favourite deserving artist for the 2009 BCIMA Awards. Nominations are now being accepted in categories of music, production, design & media. Brilliance and talent are prerequisites however, you need to pursue that dream, be driven and passionate to make it in today’s changing industry. Nominations will be open online only until September 21st at 9AM. A panel of industry experts from the BC Interior will jury the submissions and select the final three nominees in each category by Oct 12, 2009. A second panel of industry jurors will be selected for final voting to select the winners from the final three nominees in each category by Oct 26, 2009. Then, Nov 6th, the winners will be revealed! Don’t miss this exciting evening, a chance to discover new music and celebrate the Artists of the Interior.

We are very happy to welcome Astral Media as our Title sponsor and anticipate a wider reach throughout the Interior with the 22 stations they represent. “Astral Media is proud to lend support in the ever changing music industry as a key supporter of the 2009 BC Interior Music Awards. It’s a great opportunity for these artists to showcase their music and talents, meet others in their field and learn more about their business.  Astral Media is proud to promote and support Canadian artists through this important event.”  Mark Burley, Astral Media

“We will see growth to 28 Award categories being presented to honour those who have achieved excellence in this industry. The evening will include stellar performances by eight of the regions hottest bands including former award winners and future nominees. Lobby activities include Industry displays, merchandise, entertainment, food and a licensed bar.” Mark Greenhalgh, Producer of BCIMAs

BCIMA producer Shelly Vida just returned from the 17th annual Salmon Arm Roots & Blues festival and  had a chance to talk with Hugo Rampen under his new Bar-n Stage featuring both Ari Neufeld (2008 BCIMA Best Male Performer of the Year) and Sherman Doucette (2008 BCIMA Best Blues Artist of the Year).

“We wouldn’t have known about Ari if we hadn’t come to the BCIMA Awards last year.”  Hugo Rampen, Salmon Arm Roots & Blues “We hear time and again that there is nothing new in the blues, but we are proud to show the diversity of the blues genre as it reaches from BC to Serbia to New Orleans.”

Sherman Doucette has worked hard in the blues scene for many years and to witness the one on one set he had with the piano legend Ben Waters or the set with Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar, Grady) and Murray Porter, it’s evident he belongs there as a BC gem. Hoven Droven from Sweden even went home with two of Sherman’s CD’s! Sherman will surely have his European tour lined up soon. “This is just a launch for the rest of the planet!” says Sherman Doucette, Tankful of Blues.

There were some absolutely astounding performances of this diversity with at the blistering guitar chops of Ana Popovic from Serbia and the circular breathing techniques used by the amazingly energetic and talented Trombone Shorty from New Orleans!

Ari Neufeld won over many new fans with not only his performances, lyrics and demeanor, but he also did a Nick Drake workshop with Australia’s David Ross MacDonald and Dominique Fraissard from Nelson, which had the Bar-n stage audiences wild with enthusiasm.

“Salmon Arm Roots & Blues have thrown their support again towards sponsoring the 2009 BCIMA ‘Best Blues Recording’ Award. It is so great see two performers who shone on last year’s BCIMA stage be featured on the Roots & Blues stage and to know that in one year alone the implications of winning an award like the BC Interior Music Awards go far past the single glamorous night to help open doors for artists!”   Shelly Vida, Producer of BCIMAs.

Not only is the BCIMA show an excellent opportunity for regional collaboration of people in the music industry but it is a spectacular show and fun for all ages. Where else can you see that much diversity and talent in one night for only $25.00? Tickets are available at www.selectyourtickets.com  Anyone who attends the show is also welcome to come to the Habitat on Saturday afternoon Nov 7th 2009 for industry forums and workshops by Socan & BCCMA.

If you would like to become involved in this exciting and talented segment of the BC Interior Community please contact Shelly Vida.

A Markus Smythe trust account has also been established at the TD Branch 0204-6300591 for those who wish to make a donation directly.
