Shane Koyczan at Olympics now added to the Roots and Blues Line-up!

Congratulations to 2010 Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival artist, Shane Koyczan (with a zed), on the outstanding delivery of his original spoken word composition, “We Are More”, at the 2010 Olympics Opening Ceremonies on February 12th! Thousands, if not tens of thousands, of appreciative Canucks and fans from across the world, have been saturating the internet with positive comments on Shane’s golden moment. Not to mention the on-air kudos he’s been receiving from Olympic athletes and commentators since his performance, including an interview with “Today Show” host, Matt Lauer.

Shane is a multi-award winning spoken word performer and former member of T.O.F.U. which made an appearance at the Festival in 2007. He breathes new life into the genre of talk rock with his band, the Short Story Long, a trio with a musical range that stretches from folk to funk while showcasing all of the beautiful in between. Shane holds the distinctive title of 2000 National Poetry Slam Individual Champion and he and the Short Story Long were named New Artist of the Year at the 2009 British Columbia Interior Music Awards, while Roots and Blues also won an award at the BCIMA’s for Best Venue Supporting Live Music.

Roots and Blues attendees can hear more of Shane’s mind-blowing spoken word and slam poetry this summer as he and the Short Story Long take centre stage at the Festival. They’re just one of fifty acts that will fill six outdoor stages August 13th through 15th at the SA Fairgrounds, as the festival presents the best of the best in Canadian and international talent. Also featured will be the cool reggae rhythms of Mishka; the  hot and  funky firestorm known as Five Alarm Funk; guitar virtuoso and hand-tap sensastion, Eric Mongrain; a sizzlin’ mix of traditional and contemporary blues with artists like John Németh, Watermelon Slim and the Workers, Lil Ed and the Blues Imperials, Joe Louis Walker, Shemekia Copeland; and much more. With new acts currently being confirmed, Roots and Blues continues to live up to its reputation of delivering one of the best, most diverse presentations anywhere. It’s gonna be one great weekend!

Roots & Blues – More Acts Added and Member Earlybird Deadline

With more great acts being announced and the Member Earlybird deadline looming, it’s time to get your passes to this year’s Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival, taking place August 13-15 at the Salmon Arm Fairgrounds. From gospel and blues to the swaying rhythm of reggae, the line-up just keeps getting better with each new addition to the list, ensuring another fabulous weekend at the Interior’s largest multi-cultural music fest.

Recently added Alexis P. Suter is a true vocal phenomenon. When she takes the stage, thunder rumbles, lightning bolts from the sky and sparks fly everywhere! Her larger than life stage presence and powerful baritone voice have won the praise of artists like B.B. King and Levon Helm. Backed by her tight, soul-rocking ensemble, Alexis will take you on a musical journey of emotional, gut-busting blues and soul, the likes of which you’ve never experienced before.

Inspired by the rich, natural surroundings and the righteous spirit permeating the Caribbean Islands, Bermuda-born Mishka’s upbringing aboard a forty-foot sailboat built by his parents was, no doubt, a huge source of inspiration for his music. Setting his message of empowerment and encouragement to hypnotic reggae grooves filled with socially conscious lyrics and seductive vocals, Mishka’s multifaceted performances overflow with wholly positive vibrations that make him utterly captivating to see live.

Jacky Essombe’s message is simple. If you can breathe, you can dance. A true ambassador of the African culture, Jacky’s passion for African traditions inspired her to become a professional dance teacher and storyteller. Her dance workshops are particularly suitable for children as they incorporate storytelling, singing and spontaneous expressions of joy that leave everybody feeling fully alive and empowered members of the community.  There is only one rule: take your shoes off and smile!

Still in her twenties, Shemekia Copeland already has a clear shot at the future title of “Queen of the Blues”. As heir to the rich tradition of soul-drenched divas like Ruth Brown, Etta James and Koko Taylor, her passion for singing, matched with her huge, blast-furnace voice, gives her music a timeless power and a heart-pounding urgency that comes from deep within her soul.

Recordings by two of the artists booked for this year’s festival have been named among the “Top 25 Greatest Blues Albums That Defined The Past Decade” according to Blues Revue Magazine. Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials placed #11 for their 2006 CD, “Rattleshake”, and Watermelon Slim and the Workers came in at #19 for “Watermelon Slim & The Workers”, also released in 2006.

Just a few more great reasons to get your Roots and Blues tickets now. Member Earlybird passes are only available until February 19th at just $90 for adults, $68 for seniors and $55 for youth. Limit of four per member. Memberships and camping are also available. For more information on the line-up and to purchase tickets, log onto www.rootsandblues.ca or call 250-833-4096.

Court Yard Hounds

Emily Robison and Martie Maguire Officially Announce
Their Anticipated Project
Court Yard Hounds

Fans Can Pre-order the Album starting TODAY on the Court Yard Hounds Website

All Pre-orders to Receive 4 Album Tracks Instantly and Get the First Chance to Purchase Tickets for Their Upcoming Tour

New York, NY— After much chatter and anticipation, Emily Robison and Martie Maguire of The Dixie Chicks, announced today via their website that they will release new music under the moniker Court Yard Hounds. The album of all new material will be available for pre-order beginning today exclusively through www.courtyardhounds.com with all pre-orders receiving an instant gratification 4-song download not available anywhere else.  The CD is being released on Columbia Records, on shelves May 4, 2010.
To launch the new project, Emily and Martie will appear at SXSW for their first live concert as Court Yard Hounds.  The sisters will take the stage during the Americana Music Association showcase at Antone’s on Thursday March 18th and will go on to do a string of intimate shows across the country.  All Pre-orders will receive 4 album tracks instantly and get the first chance to purchase tickets for their upcoming tour. The Court Yard Hounds will tour North America throughout the summer.  The group will follow their North American roll-out with releases and touring in Europe and Australia in the fall.
“It was time,” said Emily Robison. “We had been on hiatus from The Dixie Chicks for about a year, I was getting very restless and needed to be creative for my own sanity.  And at the same time I was going through my divorce so it was very fertile ground for writing.”
“Emily was just writing and writing all of these deeply personal and truly beautiful songs,” added Martie Maguire.  “She was initially going to pitch them to other artists and I kept telling her no, no, you have to save that for you.  It’s too good and too personal.”
Emily took her sister’s advice to heart and held onto the songs, thinking perhaps they could be new material for The Dixie Chicks.  Realizing that The Dixie Chicks hiatus would last longer than originally anticipated, the sisters dove head first into recording what is now the debut album from The Court Yard Hounds.
The Court Yard Hounds’ profoundly evocative songs tell stories woven into melodies that are both individual and universal.  Robison is the lead vocalist and primary writer on most of the tracks, although Maguire takes over the lead on her own solo composition, “Gracefully.” The new music spans sounds of folk, country, rock  and Americana and includes a collaboration with Jakob Dylan on “See You in the Spring,” the wry tale of a couple from the northernmost and southernmost parts of the country who find their biggest obstacle is climatic. Texas also asserts itself more contentedly in “The Coast,” which celebrates neither the east nor west but south coast, and “Skyline,” which was inspired by the view of San Antonio from Robison’s loft. Faster paced songs range from the self-doubting levity of “Then Again” to the fiery outrage of “Ain’t No Son,” a song about an angry, disapproving father. “Fairytale” speaks to romantic enchantment, while there’s no happily-ever-after in sight in the breakup songs “April’s Love” and “It Didn’t Make a Sound.”

One of the biggest comedy events of the year: I Am Woman Hear Me Laff 6

*** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ***
One of the biggest comedy events of the year: I Am Woman Hear Me Laff 6

I Am Woman, Hear Me Laff 6
Featuring Headliner Nikki Payne with the LAFF RIOT GIRLS
In celebration of International Women’s Day
(warning:  adult material and language in this show)
Monday March 8th 2010 -  8:00pm
Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre

The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre’s 6th annual celebration of International Women’s Day, I Am Woman Hear Me Laff 6 takes to stage at 8pm on March 8. Headliner Nikki Payne, will be joined by Laff Riot Girls Ardell Fitzpatrick, Marlene Swidzinski and Melanie Rose to make this year’s evening of side-splitting laff-ter the stand-up comedy event of the year.

Vernon’s signature International Women’s Day celebration is now in its sixth year with each show more successful than the last. Those who know about it return year after year making it regularly sold out.

Building on the success of previous years, bigger names in the stand-up comedy world keep getting added to the roster for an event that can easily be called a staple in the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre Society’s season.

This year’s headliner will be the ever quirky and slightly psychotic Nikki Payne, who describes herself as “an angry hobbit that freaks out on stage to the people’s delight.” Well known for her lisp, curious stage antics and incredible use of duct tape, this bombshell comedienne has taken home some prestigious Canadian Comedy Awards, including Best Stand-up Newcomer in 2001 and followed by Best Female Stand-up in 2003, 2005 and 2008. “I’m still very confused that I’m successful” says Payne, “I won’t be happy until I rule the world.”

Payne’s Vernon visit might find her particularly agitated, too. “My great Grampa was named Vernon. I would like to see the shrine of him in the town square.” – added the former Last Comic Standing contestant and regular Much Music Video on Trial commentator. Who knows how she’ll react upon arrival and finding no such shrine.

March 8th ticket holders will also be treated to an extra punch of Canada’s finest comedy from Ardell Fitzpatrick, Marlene Swidzinski and Melanie Rose of the Laff Riot Girls: Western Canada’s longest running independent stand up comedy show.

Ardell Fitzpatrick, a.k.a. the mouth that roared, is the founder of the Laff Riot Girls. She has performed at festivals and comedy clubs all across the country, entertaining with her ‘shoot from the lip’ no holds barred look at life, love and… being on an oxygen tank? If you think that’ll slow down this Gemini nominated comic (for W TV’s She’s So Funny) you don’t know Ardell!

Marlene Swidzinski returned to the comedy stage last summer after a 15-year hiatus. In November, she won the Laff Riot Girls 7th Annual Search for the Funniest New Female Comic contest and also placed second in Vancouver’s 2009 Funniest Comic with a Day Job contest.

Melanie Rose was born in Vancouver BC, and was the runner up in the Laff Riot Girls 7th Annual Search for the Funniest New Female Comic contest. She was married to a bank robber until she divorced him — not for being a criminal (that would be judging), but because he was a lousy bank robber.
